The Hungarian team of Tamás Decsi, Csanád Gémesi, András Szatmári and Áron Szilágyi ended Olympic gold medallists South Korea's run of four consecutive men's sabre world titles at the Milan Convention Centre.

South Korea led 35-33 in the final, but Szatmári beat Kim Jun-ho 7-4 to put Hungary 40-39 in front, and three time back-to-back individual Olympic champion Szilágyi sealed the victory with a 5-3 triumph over Oh Sang-uk to triumph 45-42.

Hungary had earlier thrashed Japan 45-25 in the quarter-finals and triumphed 45-36 against France in the semi-finals.

The United States were beaten 45-27 by South Korea in the semi-finals, but recovered to win their first-ever World Championships men's team sabre medal with a 45-44 victory against France in the match for bronze.

South Korea were also dethroned as world champions in the women's team épée, losing 33-32 to Poland in the semi-finals.

Poland followed it with a 32-28 success against hosts Italy in the match for gold.

Their team was comprised of Renata Knapik-Miazga, Magdalena Pawłowska, Martyna Swatowska-Wenglarczyk and Ewa Trzebińska.

South Korea completed the podium with a 45-32 victory against Switzerland for bronze.

Olympic gold medallists Estonia lost 40-32 in the round of 16 to Hong Kong.

The penultimate day of the FIE Fencing World Championships is set to be held tomorrow, featuring the end of the women's foil and men's épée team events.

Reigning women's team foil world champions Italy beat Romania 45-18 to reach a quarter-final against Germany, and defending men's team épée champions France beat Saudi Arabia 45-41 and Canada 45-26 to set up a last eight tie against Kazakhstan.
