Guadeloupe handed Cuba its second group stage defeat as Canada was held to a goalless draw by Guatemala in Group D of the 2023 Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Gold Cup.

Guadeloupe is now top of the group with four points after defeating Cuba 4-1 to make significant step towards their first quarter-finals appearance since 2009.

It was end-to end in the first half with Matthias Phaëton drawing first blood in the 13th minute, powering one to the top left after Cuba made a blunder during a throw in.

Aricheell Hernandez, Maykel Reyes and Willian Pozo tried their luck for Cuba, but keeper Davy Rouyard kept them at bay in the first 45 minutes in style.

With four minutes remaining for the first half, Ange Plumain doubled the advantage for Guadeloupe.

Two minutes later, Phaëton bagged his second of the night and third of the tournament so far.

Momentum continued for Guadeloupe in the second half as Anthony Baron scored a superb goal after a spin inside the box to make it 4-0.

In what was the first meeting between the two sides, Cuba got a consolation through a penalty.

Aricheell Hernandez made no mistake from the spot in the 62nd minute but the result was beyond doubt at this point.

Late drama saw Cuban Aldair Ruiz sent off and will miss the final group game against Canada.

Goalkeepers stole the show in the other game between Canada and Guatemala at the Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Milan Borjan of Canada and Guatemalan goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen were having a contest of their own to see who makes the most saves.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Junior Hoilett tried their best to score for Canada but simply could not find a way past Borjan.

The second half saw Guatemala attack with Carlos Mejia and Jose Pinto missing the goal thanks to heroics from Hagen.
