Guatemala downed Cuba 1-0 thanks to a Darwin Lom strike to top Group D at their Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Gold Cup opener in Fort Lauderdale.

In the other match, Canada who are favourites to top Group D, dropped points after a stoppage-time goal helped Guadeloupe to a 2-2 draw.

Lom, who replaced star forward Rubio Rubin 10 minutes into the game, helped Guatemala to their first win in the group stage of the Gold Cup since 2011.

Guatemala started the game at the DRV PNK Stadium creating plenty of chances but was not able to find the finishing touch.

Nathaniel Mendez troubled goalkeeper Raiko Arozarena early on before a spectacular effort from Alejandro Galindo went wide.

Lom had a chance to give them the lead through a penalty kick after Carlos Mejia was fouled inside the box at the cusp of halftime only for Arozarena to produce a superb save.

However, three minutes after the restart, Lom made up for the penalty miss to score from a Mendez pass.

While Cuba tried to trouble Guatemala towards the end, a resilient defensive performance was enough to secure a historic win for Luis Fernando Tena's men.

At the BMO Field in Toronto, hosts Canada were feeling the pressure from the stat with Thierry Ambrose forcing Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan into an early save.

However, Ambrose broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute from a Jordan Leborgne pass to give Guadeloupe the lead.

Canada began the second half on the front foot as Lucas Cavallini started and finished a move to level the scores.

The forward found Junior Hoilett on the wings before running to be at the end of a cross to finish a great team goal.

Canada went ahead in the 70th minute when Meddy Lina's clearance from a Richie Laryea shot went in.

But there was late drama as a 94th-minute freekick led to an own goal.

Midfielder Johan Rotsen who sent the ball in saw his effort headed out by Nathanael Saintini only for Ambrose to whip it back in.

His low cross was deflected in off Canada's Jacen Russell Rowe for the equaliser.
