Brazil and Turkey, the current respective men’s and women’s Paralympic goalball gold medallists, have added the World Championships titles to their name after taking the crowns in Matosinhos, Portugal.

Brazil claimed the World Championship title for the third time in a row in the men’s competition, edging a tight game against China 6-5.

Brazil’s third successive World Championship crown saw them make history at the Centro de Desportos e Congressos as no team has achieved this feat before.

In the women’s event Turkey ran out comfortable 10-4 winners against South Korea to also add World Championship gold to the Paralympic title they won in Tokyo, Japan last year.

There was guaranteed to be a new women’s world champion with holders Russia unable to compete as they are suspended from International Blind Sports Federation events due to the war in Ukraine.

The four finalists at the Goalball World Championships in Matosinhos also secured places at the Paris 2024 Paralympics by reaching the gold medal matches.

This year’s Goalball World Championships were due to be held in Hangzhou, China, in June but were postponed due to the coronavirus situation and restrictions on international travel, with Matosinhos stepping up as new hosts.
