World Triathlon has banned Russians and Belarusians from its competition because of the war in Ukraine, in accordance with an International Olympic Committee recommendation. 

Shoigu, who is the daughter of Russia's Defence Minister, described the re-admission of Russian athletes to international events as the RTF's "main goal".

"The FTR is in constant contact with World Triathlon and ETU [European Triathlon Union] at all levels," Shoigu said, as reported by state news agency TASS.

"Our delegates were present at the World Triathlon Championships. 

"International work continues in a bilateral format - we are in constant contact with World Triathlon President Marisol Casado. 

"The main goal - the admission of our athletes to international competitions in 2023."

Triathlon's qualification period for the next Olympics is already underway and the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes is impacting their chances of earning berths, should the nations be cleared to compete at Paris 2024.

World Triathlon barred Russian and Belarusian athletes on March 1 because of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion was launched on February 24, at least 6,702 civilians have been killed in Ukraine, according to the United Nations.

It is feared the true figure is far higher, while the combined military death toll is in the tens of thousands.

Shoigu's father Segei, as Defence Minister, is playing a prominent role in the war planning.

The younger Shoigu has also been photographed with President Vladimir Putin while what Russia calls the "special military operation" has been ongoing.

Before that, World Triathlon sanctioned the RTF for "the significant number of doping cases in Russia" in December 2021.

Among the sanctions, initially in place for a year, was a ban on the RTF staging any world- or European-level events.

Russian officials who sat on World Triathlon and ETU bodies were also told they must resign for a period of at least a year.
