The World Karate Federation (WKF) is "truly honoured" to be shortlisted for the Institution of the Year award by Peace and Sport.

The WKF is one of three organisations on the shortlist thanks to its Guardian Girls Karate scheme, which seeks to use the sport and its values to fight gender-based violence.

Birmingham City Council is also nominated, for the Be Bold Be Birmingham campaign which accompanied the Commonwealth Games and sought to drive community engagement.

The National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark completes the shortlist for its get2sport scheme and the Soldier Project.

Those projects place a special focus on children and veterans in efforts to foster inclusion through sport.

Guardian Girls Karate was launched this year in Los Angeles by the WKF, Koyamada International Foundation (KIF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Olympic karateka took part in Guardian Girls Karate's first self-defence seminar, while sessions on mental health have also been held under the project's auspices. 

"We are truly honoured to be nominated for the Peace and Sport Awards," WKF President Antonio Espinós said.

"The Guardian Girls Global Karate programme is one of the most significant and ambitious initiatives of the World Karate Federation, and we are grateful to have two phenomenal partners such as KIF and UNFPA in this journey.

"We truly believe that we can make a difference through karate, and we are hoping that thousands of girls and women will be empowered by the Guardian Girls Global Karate programme. 

"This nomination is the confirmation that we are on the right path."

Peace and Sport is a Monaco-based charity known best for the White Card campaign its runs on April 6 annually.
