Kenya National Sports Council chairman Nderitu Gikaria has said his country's preparations for the Accra 2023 African Games remain on track as teams and athletes set their sights on qualification events.

Gikaria confirmed that 23 National Federations had submitted their budgets for the continental multi-sport event that is due to be staged in August next year.

"We have sent a tentative budget to the Government through the Ministry of Sports covering the period prior to the Games," said Gikaria in comments reported by Kenyan newspaper The Star.

"This will cover the qualification of teams, affiliation fees, qualifiers and build-up matches."

Kenya placed seventh on the medals table at the Rabat 2019 African Games after claiming 31 medals - 11 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze.

Kenyans will hope to better that record but Gikaria said he was not looking past the qualification events to get into next year's African Games.

"Team events will go through qualification because Africa Zone Five will only be represented by one team in each discipline," said Gikaria.

"For a team to represent their respective discipline, they will have to beat 11 other countries, which is no mean task.

"This is the reason why Kenyan football has never represented the country since the 1987 African Games in Nairobi."

August 4 to 19 has been earmarked as the window for the African Games in Accra as Ghana prepares to stage the event for the first time.

"Early preparations will be key if we want to get it right for the Games," added Gikaria.
