Al-Mazydi raised 135 kilograms in the men's under-73kg snatch event to secure pole heading into the clean and jerk.

Right on his tail, however, was Mahmoud Al-Humayd on 132kg.

Further afield Yousef Al-Medarhm lifted 124kg to give himself a shot for at least a bronze.

But, those hopes were quickly dashed when he failed on his three clean and jerk attempts.

Al-Medarhm was the only athlete to record zero in the event.

Eventually, competition came down to the final two weightlifters - Al-Mazydi and Al-Humayd.

Al-Humayd stepped up first, setting the bar at 162kg at the Al-Riyadh Club.

Al-Mazydi matched his opponent, again at 167kg and crucially at 171kg.

The successful third attempt confirmed him as the category's champion while Abdulrahman Al-Beladi finished third, despite not coming in the top three of either event.

In the women's under-59kg, Nisrine Ali climbed to the top and stayed there.

She lifted 66kg in snatch and 81 in clean and jerk to total 147kg and secure the gold medal.

Alanoud Al-Shehri trailed by five after recording 62kg and 80kg while Fatemah Al-Kahawaher came third overall with a score of 122.

She lifted 55kg and 67kg in snatch and clean and jerk.

Meanwhile, at the King Saud University Arena, judoka fighter Lamia Al-Fahdi defeated Ghada Al-Atiq via ippon to win the women's under-63kg title.

Al-Fahdi and Al-Atiq succeeded against Raghad Al-Zahrani and Rima Al-Sudairi respectively in the semi-finals.

In the women's over-63kg event, Tahani Al-Qahtani was crowned as the champion with Maodhy Haroun settling for silver.

Al-Qahtani outmatched Fai Al-Salboud while Haroun won inside 15 seconds against Mazoon Ibrahim in their semi-final duels.
