Olympic champion Kellie Harrington was one of three Irish victors on a great second day of the European Women's Boxing Championships in Budva for the country.

Harrington fought Turkey's Ozer Gizem in the last bout of the day at the Montenegrin town, and the Tokyo 2020 gold medallist edged a split decision.

Harrington is through to the lightweight quarter-finals and therefore one win away from the guarantee of a medal.

The same goes for compatriot Michaela Walsh, an under-57 kilograms gold medallist at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Walsh also won via a split decision, in her case over Amina Zidani of France.

Carly McNaul was Ireland's third winner of the day, bettering Romania's Ana Alexandra Gheorghe in the eyes of all five judges.

The European Boxing Confederation event is taking place without boxers from Russia and Belarus, but only because the entry list was closed before the International Boxing Association decided they should be allowed to return to competition under national flags.

Thirty-one other nations are represented.

Action at the Mediterranean Sport Center is set to continue until next Saturday (October 22).
