Concussion policy is to be changed at the International Taekwon-Do Federation ©ITF

The International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) has introduced its new concussion policy in a virtual meeting, which looks to reduce the probability of such head injuries in competition fighting and sparring.

A presentation was shown prior to the Taekwon-Do World Cup by medical professionals and ITF Board members, who explained the dangers of traumatic brain injuries and how the concussion policy would detect and treat potential injuries at ITF event.

"Head injuries can have serious consequences and we all have a responsibility; the medical department, umpires, coaches, and also the ITF as an organisation," said ITF President Paul Weiler.

ITF already has safety equipment including head protection for sparring; and last year, the ITF introduced the Tournament Concussion Policy which gives medical staff at all ITF competitions additional time to treat competitors with potential concussions.

This most-recent presentation was held by medical professionals who had experience at ITF events, who reviewed sparring videos at the ITF competitions and the dangers that could come from them.

More than 100 people were involved in the presentations, including those who are umpires  and coaches, athletes and medical staff.

Additional presentations are to follow in the coming weeks for those who were unable to attend.
