The Hong Kong Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (HKSAPD) has collaborated with Victoria Recreation Club (VRC) to establish a new permanent Para archery range.

The range, which is being built at Emerald Bay to the east of the city, will be developed to celebrate the association's 50th anniversary.

It will aim to provide a long-term, stable training venue for the Hong Kong squad, who will be given priority of the facilities, but also VRC members and other archery enthusiasts in the general public with physical impairments.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the project, which has been made possible by financial support from the Sir David Trench Fund, on June 5.

Various events will be organised at the range, including fun days, training and coaching courses.

It is hoped that the modern, accessible facilities will enhance participants’ interests in Para archery, as well as identify and nurture new talents and coaches for the sport.

After being established in 1972, the HKSAPD now provides 11 different sports for those with disabilities, including badminton, lawn bowling and wheelchair fencing.

The VRC is documented as having been in operation since 1832, making it the oldest sporting and recreation club in the territory.

Hong Kong has won a total of 131 medals in Paralympic Games history, but is yet to win a medal in archery.
