McConnell triumphed in the 23.80 kilometres women's elite race in 1 hour 19min 39sec, giving her a 48-second margin of victory over Sweden's Rio 2016 Olympic champion Jenny Rissveds.

This was McConnell's second victory in the space of three days at the German venue, after her success on the short track on Friday (May 6).

Mona Mitterwallner of Austria rounded off the podium in 1:20:39, finishing well clear of the 2021 overall Mountain Bike World Cup cross-country champion Loana Lecomte of France, who clocked 1:21:30 in fourth.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Jolanda Neff of Switzerland had to settle for ninth in 1:22:55.

McConnell's victory hands her a healthy early lead at the top of the individual cross-country World Cup standings with 620 points to the 373 of The Netherlands' Anne Terpstra, who finished eighth in 1:22:46 in Albstadt.

The reigning men's cross-country Olympic champion Tom Pidcock of Britain came out on top in the men's elite race.

He finished the 28km race in 1:18:42, beating Switzerland's Nino Schurter by 20 seconds.

Three-time Olympic medallist and seven-time overall World Cup champion Schurter remains one victory away from a record 34 career Mountain Bike World Cup wins.

Romania's Vlad Dascălu placed third for the second consecutive cross-country event, finishing in 1:09:03, with France's Titouan Carod a further 18 seconds back.

Schurter leads the overall standings after two of the nine events on this season's circuit with 538 points, with Maxime Marotte of France - 12th today - in second on 361.

The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup is set to continue in Nové Město na Moravě in the Czech Republic from Friday (May 13) until next Sunday (May 15).
