The International Biathlon Union (IBU) mobile app has received two prizes at an annual Finnish digital media competition.

The application was billed as "a game-changer for biathlon" at the Grand One Awards Gala in Kattilahalli.

Grand One is Finland's largest digital media competition, with the event celebrating its 21st year.

The IBU mobile app won the Grand Prix prize for the best service overall, as well as triumphing in the category for best mobile service.

"The design of the service has been done with high quality, involving the end user, guided by business goals," the jury said.

"The design has started with an understanding of genuine customer needs and the implementation reflects the traditions of Scandinavian design: simplicity and functionality.

"The end result of the service is a polished whole.

"The results are based on a systematic design process in which the technological possibilities, the needs of the users and the business objectives are the subject of dialogue.

"The work shows that Finland is able to plan and implement services at an international level."

The IBU partnered with Finnish designers Petri Pennanen and Mikko Kiviniemi to create designs for the app.

The designs were then implemented by Finnish digital transformation agency Vincit.

Vincit partnered with the IBU last year, with the company tasked with launching a new biathlonworld.com website and iOS and Android applications.

The applications were designed to allow fans to follow competitions in real-time as well as provide second-screen functionality with personalised user experiences, user-friendly statistics and insights into competitions, and high-quality video and image content.

The deal with Vincit, a company founded in 2007, included maintenance services up until the end of 2025.

Works must have been published or redesigned media works were permitted to enter the Grand One awards.

Entries must have been planned in Finland, but can have been implemented internationally between January 29 in 2021 and January 20 in 2022.

Winners were presented in nineteen categories, in addition to the Company of the Year and Grand Prix winners in the service and campaign categories.

Categories were divided into three main areas, marketing communications and content, data and Innovation, and design and user experience.
