Lisa Eriksson triumphed in the girls' 7.5 kilometres freestyle competition in cross-country skiing yesterday, and her compatriot Andersson also claimed victory on the first day of biathlon competition at the Winter EYOF.

Today's action in biathlon came in the sprint events.

Over 6 kilometres in the girls' competition, Andersson led from the first intermediate checkpoint at 0.8km, and was so far in the clear she could afford one miss on her second visit to the shooting range.

Her finishing time of 17min 8.9sec was more than half-a-minute clear of her nearest challengers.

The podium was completed by two Slovenian athletes.

Klara Vindisar finished 35.1 off the pace in 17:44.0, while Kaja Zorc was the only one of the medallists who shot clean as she placed third in 17:49.0.

Zorc's performance at the range proved crucial, with Italy's Sara Scattolo only 0.2 behind despite a miss on her first round.

In the men's 7.5km, Czech Republic's Peter Hak finished strongly to earn a comfortable victory.

Placed third after 4.3km, Hak moved into the ascendancy in the second half of the race, and was the only athlete who finished in under 20 minutes.

Hak clocked 19:57.4, which was 24.4 clear of Italy's Mattia Piller Hoffer.

Both of the top-two were faultless with their rifles.

Lou Thievent of France had one miss on his second round, and had to settle for third place in 20:22.2.

Poland's Konrad Badacz finished 2.2 off the podium in fourth place.

Biathlon competition continues with the individual events on Friday (March 25).
