The 14th edition of the Icestocksport World Championships is set to begin tomorrow in Ritten in Italy, with competition concluding on February 27.

The event at the Ritten Arena will feature a team tournament, individual and team target events and a long-distance competition.

The team tournament will see two teams of four players go head-to-head, with the quartets allowed to be male, female or mixed line-ups.

Tomorrow will see the Opening Ceremony and parade of nations before the men's and women's team competition begins on Wednesday (February 23), when the men's long-distance also gets underway.

The men's and women's target events then commence on Thursday (February 24) prior to finals on Friday and Saturday (February 26 and 27).

The International Federation Icestocksport (IFI) is implementing strict COVID-19 countermeasures, stating that for anyone to have access to the stadium they must be completely vaccinated or have recovered from previously having the virus.

The event is directly following on from the Under-23 World Championships and Under-19 and Under-16 European Championships.

Germany and Austria dominated proceedings in both events, winning every gold medal apart from the European under-16 men's individual event won by Lithuanian Rytis Petruskevicius.

Germany won eight gold, nine silver and two bronze medals while Austria took eight gold, five silver and seven bronze medals.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IFI said it is not able to cover the same subsidies as it previously did for participating teams at the World Championships.

"We would like to welcome the best players and teams of your nation for long-distance, target and team competitions in Klobenstein-Ritten," said IFI President Christian Lindner.

"Furthermore a mixed team target competition is scheduled for the day of the finals."
