Anna Matus and Gabriele Goffredo have been awarded the World Games Athletes of the Month award for January following their success at the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) World Games Continental Qualifier for Europe.

The Moldovan pair won the Latin dance discipline at the qualification event in Fene in Spain to confirm their place at the World Games 2022 in Birmingham in the United States.

It gives them the chance to claim their third consecutive gold medal at the event after triumphing at Cali 2013 in Colombia and Wrocław 2017 in Poland.

Their standout performance reminded fans why they are among the favourites for the competition at the Legacy Arena in the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Complex on July 8.

Matus and Goffredo were also shortlisted for the International World Games Association Greatest Athlete of All Time award in 2021.

They have won 79 dancesport events in their competitive career and currently hold six world championship titles with three in the adults category and three in the professional division.

As a result of being crowned Athletes of the Month, Matus and Goffredo will receive the World Games Athlete of the Month diploma as well as a gift from the award's sponsor Protective Life, an insurance company.

Dancesport has been included in the World Games sporting programme since the 1997 edition in Lahti in Finland.

Standard and latin disciplines have been included from the beginning, while rock'n'roll was introduced in 2005 before salsa in 2013.

Breaking is set to feature at the Games for the first time in Birmingham after being contested at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games, prior to making its Olympic debut at Paris 2024.
