Mexico's Melissa Martinez Aceves has been named World Games Athlete of the Month for October following her success at the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) World Championships in Jesolo in Italy.

Martinez Aceves triumphed in the women's under-52 kilograms, qualifying for the 2022 World Games in Birmingham in Alabama and earning the WAKO award for the Best Female Competitor in the Ring Disciplines.

The world champion was left elated after he victory in Jesolo.

"There are no words to describe how I feel," Martinez Aceves said.

"It was a period of very hard preparation, and they were definitely the toughest fights I've had in my career.

"It was excitement full of emotion when I stood on the victory podium and sang the Mexican national anthem.

"It was a feeling I simply cannot explain."

Martinez Aceves also featured at the last edition of the World Games in the Polish city of Wrocław in 2017, winning a silver medal in the women's under-60kg division and only denied a gold by home favourite Marta Waliczek.

The World Games Athlete of the Month will receive a diploma and a gift from the sponsor of the award, Protective Life, to mark her achievement.

Her brother David is also a kickboxer who has qualified to represent Mexico at next year's World Games.

Previous winners of The World Games Athlete of the Month award this year include Sweden's mixed tug-of-war in September, Slovenian sports climber and Olympic gold medallist Janja Garnbret in August and Turkey's aerobic gymnastics world champion Ayşe Onbaşı.

The World Games are due to take place in Birmingham from July 7 to 17 next year.

The event for sports not included at the Olympics was delayed by a year as COVID-19 forced the rescheduling of Tokyo 2020.
