Olympic boxing champion Lauren Price has said she intends to turn professional this year, a move which may cast doubt over the defence of her Commonwealth Games title in Birmingham.

Price clinched the women's middleweight boxing crown for Wales at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, then added an Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020 last year representing Britain.

She is also a reigning world champion as an amateur boxer.

Having also received the Member of the Order of the British Empire award earlier this week, Price confirmed that she intends to turn to professional boxing in 2022.

"I'm definitely going to go professional, it should come out in the next few weeks who I intend to sign with," she told BBC Sport Wales.

Price added: "Winning Olympic gold changed my life.

"The money is there now for women's boxing.

"It's an exciting time in general for women's boxing and a lot of people are saying to me we've got it good, the money is there for the women that has never been there before.

"I won the Olympics and thought 'what do I do now?'.

"But the professional challenge, it excites me, I am really looking forward to it."

Price served as a Batonbearer for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games on the day of the Queen's Baton Relay launch in October.

Wales' Chef de Mission Nicola Phillips expressed hope that the country's top athletes would choose to feature at Birmingham 2022 during an interview with insidethegames in November.

However, if she does turn professional before the Games, the former kickboxing world champion and Welsh international footballer's involvement would be uncertain.

Price had opted to focus on boxing over football before the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Women's boxing made its debut at the Games in the Scottish city, with Price collecting a bronze in the middleweight division.

Boxing at this year's Commonwealth Games is set to be held at the National Exhibition Centre.

Birmingham 2022 is scheduled to be held from July 28 to August 8.
