Burundi's Rodrigue Kwizera held off Ethiopia's Nibret Melak in an exciting finish to the men's race to win his seventh of the 2021-2022 World Athletics Cross Country Tour, remaining unbeaten at the Cross Internacional de Venta de Baños in Spain.

He finished 7sec in front of the Ethiopian in a time of 32min 30sec, with the pair far in front of the rest of the field.

Uganda's Albert Chemutai was 34sec behind the winner for the bronze, another 17sec ahead of Eritrean Merhawi Mebrahtu in fourth.

The first home athlete was Carlos Mayo in fifth, followed by compatriots Nassin Hassaous and Adel Mechaal.

Kenya's Edinah Jebitok won the women's race by over a minute, finishing in 28:44.

Likina Amebaw of Ethiopia was her closest challenger in 29:53, who was 1min in front of Turkey's bronze medallist Emine Mechaal.

Laura Luengo and Blanca Fernandez of Spain completed the top five.
