The Netherlands made a promising start to the European Short Course Swimming Championships by claiming two gold medals on the opening night of finals in Kazan.

Luc Kroon topped the podium in the men's 400 metres freestyle event to clinch the biggest victory of his career to date.

Kroon touched the wall in 3min 38.33sec, finishing 0.25sec clear of Italy's Matteo Ciampi in second.

The bronze medal went to Ciampi's compatriot Marco De Tullio, who clocked 3:38.80.

The Dutch earned their second title of the night when their men's 4x50m freestyle squad edged out Italy.

Jesse Puts, Stan Pijnenburg, Kenzo Simons and Thom De Boer completed the race in 1:22.89 to take gold by just 0.03.

Russia did enough for bronze after finishing in 1:23.25.

Turkey's Viktoria Gunes smashed her personal best and broke her country's national record in winning the women's 400m individual medley in style.

Gunes, a four-time world junior champion, clocked 4:30.45 to beat Serbia's Anja Crevar by a mere 0.02.

Crevar was forced to settle for the silver medal, with Sara Franceschi of Italy securing bronze in 4:30.47.

Russia sealed their first crown of their home Championships thanks to their women's 4x50m freestyle team, which clocked 1:34.92.

The Netherlands were second in 1:35.47, while Poland were third in 1:35.94.

The Championships are due to continue tomorrow.
