Chungwon Choue has been elected unopposed for a fifth full term as World Taekwondo President at the international governing body's General Assembly held virtually.

Choue first assumed the position in 2004.

He was elected with 129 of the 131 votes at this year's General Assembly, all of which were done electronically.

The General Assembly was delayed to October because of the COVID-19 enforced postponement to the World Taekwondo Championships in Wuxi in China.

The South Korean has said he will aim to increase women's representation in World Taekwondo and continue with virtual taekwondo's progress.

World Taekwondo implemented new governance reforms for the first time which dictate that new candidates must be younger than 70 on the day of the election, and those standing for re-election cannot be 80 or older.

Elected officials are also now limited to three consecutive terms, but this does not apply to terms served prior to the introduction of the reforms.

"It is a great honour to have been re-elected as President of World Taekwondo and to lead our great sport forward," Choue said.

"Over the past year and a half, we used the time we had to reset our operations.

"Now, it is time to restart and elevate World Taekwondo to the top.

"Now more than ever, we need to stand united and have harmony.

"Therefore, I sincerely wish for the CUs [continental unions] to work closely with World Taekwondo as we aim to become one of the best and most respected international sports federations by our 50th founding anniversary in 2023."

Under the governance reforms, the female Council candidate with the most votes assumed a vice-presidential role in a bid to boost the gender balance in leadership positions within the sport.

The other five vice-presidential roles are held by the continental union Presidents, whose elections were all confirmed prior to the World Taekwondo General Assembly.

These are Niger's Issaka Ide for World Taekwondo Africa, South Korean Lee Kyu-seok for the Asian Taekwondo Union, Sakis Pragalos from Greece for the European Taekwondo Union, Australia's John Kotsifas for World Taekwondo Australia and Mexico's Juan Manuel Lopez for the Pan American Taekwondo Union.

The new rules also ensured at least one female Council member was elected from the five continental unions.

National Taekwondo Federation of Guatemala President Maria Rosario Borello Castillo was elevated to the role of vice-president after being re-elected to the Council.

Inseon Kim of the United States was also re-elected as a Council member for Pan-America, and will be joined by his compatriot Richard Jay Warwick.

Chilean Mario Mandel was the fourth Council member from the continental union.

South Korean pair Yang Jin-bang and Jung Kook-hyun were both re-elected to the Council for Asia, alongside Jordan's Nadin Farid Khalil Dawani.

The United Arab Emirates' Ahmed Hamdan Alzeyoudi is a new Council member and the fourth Asian representative.

Europe's Council members include the re-elected Italian Taekwondo Federation President Angelo Cito, Russian Taekwondo Union chief Anatoly Terekhov and Turkey Taekwondo Federation President Metin Şahin.

Anna Vassallo of Malta becomes Europe's female representative on the Council.

Royal Moroccan Taekwondo Federation leader Driss El Hilali was re-elected as one of Africa's representatives, and will be joined by Margaret Elizabeth Binga of Nigeria and Egypt's Mohamed Shaaban.

Completing the 17-member Council are Hassan Iskandar of Australia and New Zealand's Jamie Lee Carpenter.

Turkey's Ali Sagirkaya beat Croatian Dalibor Krpan to the position of auditor.

It was confirmed that next year's General Assembly would be held at the postponed World Taekwondo Championships in Wuxi on April 12.
