The European Individual Women's Chess Championships start tomorrow in Iasi ©ECU

A trio of Georgians start as the favourites at the 2021 European Individual Women's Chess Championship, which is set to begin tomorrow in Iasi in Romania.

Nino Batsishvili leads compatriots Lela Javakhishvili and Bela Khotenashvili in the seeding, while Russian Olga Girya is the fourth seed in front of her compatriot Anastasia Bodnaruk.

There are a total of 117 players from 29 European countries registered for the event.

Azerbaijan's Gunay Mammadzada, Romanian Irina Bulmaga, Meri Arabidze of Georgia, Olga Badelka of Belarus and Julija Osmak of Ukraine complete the top 10 seeds.

Five players are grandmasters and 22 are women grandmasters.

The event will be played in 11 rounds in a Swiss-system tournament format.

Defending champion Alina Kashlinskaya of Russia is not registered for the competition, nor are her compatriots Alexandra Kosteniuk and Aleksandra Goryachkina, who were in the final of the Women's Chess World Cup earlier this week.

The total prize fund for the tournament is €60,000 (£51,000/$71,000).

This competition is a qualification event for the 2022 Women's Chess World Cup, which in accordance with International Chess Federation regulations and the European Chess Union Board decision, will see at least 10 players will qualify for the World Cup.

The European Individual Women's Chess Championship is scheduled to run until August 20.
