Marianne Vos won her second stage in the Giro Donne today, although with three stages remaining her Dutch compatriot Anna van der Breggen has further strengthened her lead in the general classification.

Vos, 34, who preceded van der Breggen as Olympic road race champion at London 2012, held off Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini, riding for Trek-Segafredo, to bring home her second victory in this year’s race for Jumbo Visma.

Vos, who has now won a total of 30 stages in this event over the last 14 years, and won it overall on three occasions, won the bunch sprint on an uphill finish to the stage from Soprazocco to Puegnago Del Garda.

After withstanding a push from Borghini a kilometre from the finish she started her own bid for victory 300 metres from the line.

Van der Breggen, riding for Team SD Worx, was third, stretching her lead in the overall standings.

She has a total time of 17hr 00min 14sec, followed by team mates Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio of South Africa at 2min 55sec behind, and fellow Dutch rider Demi Vollering at 3:07.

Britain’s Lizzie Deignan, riding for Trek-Segafredo, is fourth at 5:56.
