The International Floorball Federation (IFF) has postponed the Women’s Under-19 World Championship for a third time due to COVID-19 restrictions in Sweden.

The tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Swedish city Uppsala in May 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic forced organisers to move it to September.

A further postponement saw the event shifted to May 2021, when the IFF had hoped the pandemic would be under control and life may have returned to normal.

But the event has been moved again and is now planned to take place from September 1 to 5 this year.

The latest decision was made by the IFF Executive Committee after accepting a proposal from the Swedish Floorball Federation (SFF).

The SFF informed the IFF it was unable to host the event in May due to restrictions imposed by the Swedish Public Health Agency.

According to the IFF, the rules state that all sports events in Sweden that are not considered professional should be cancelled or postponed.

"The postponement was done based on the interest and need of the athletes and the local organiser," said IFF secretary general John Liljelund.

"The IFF appreciates the great effort of the Swedish Floorball Federation and their event partners in trying to enable the WFC to be played.

"They recognise the significance of the event for the players as well as the city of Uppsala, and are doing all possible to deliver the event, even with a reduced number of teams and at a possible financial loss.

"Unfortunately, the latest decision of the Public Health Agency has made it impossible to hold the event on the planned dates, but we are hopeful that the situation will improve over the next few months and we can welcome the teams to Uppsala in September."

Sarah Mitchell, event manager for the IFF, added: "We understand that this further postponement will be difficult for the players and the Member Associations.

"This is an event that many of them have been working towards for several years and we are doing our utmost to find a way for the event to go ahead."

Coronavirus cases continue to rise in Sweden, which has recorded around 13,200 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
