The International Floorball Federation (IFF) has confirmed new dates for the men’s and women’s World Floorball Championships in 2021.

The Men’s World Floorball Championships had been set to take place from December 4 to 12 before being postponed last month following a request from the Finnish Floorball Federation (SSBL), which cited uncertainty over travel and restrictions around gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Floorball's worldwide governing body has confirmed the competition is now scheduled to be held in Helsinki from December 3 to 11 next year - dates requested by the SSBL.

The dates were due to clash with the Women's World Floorball Championships in Uppsala in Sweden, which was due to run from December 4 to 12.

The Swedish Floorball Federation agreed to move the dates to November 27 to December 5, meaning there is only a minimal overlap between the two events.

"IFF has been in contact with both the Finnish and the Swedish Federation and discussed the situation," IFF secretary general John Liljelund explained.

"The main issue has been that there is limited arena availability in Helsinki.

"After thorough evaluation, the Swedish Floorball Federation and the City of Uppsala has been able to find a new solution, the best available in the current situation, which the IFF is really thankful for.

"The IFF Central Board has now approved the Swedish Federation's proposal to play the Women’s World Floorball Championships in Uppsala November 27 to December 5, as this is the only other option in November, prior to the Men’s World Floorball Championships.

"This will cause a three-day overlap with the Men’s World Floorball Championships group stage that we need to take advantage of."

The men’s tournament in Helsinki is set to feature 16 teams, with hosts Finland eyeing a third consecutive title.

The last seven finals of the biennial event have all been contested between Finland and Sweden.

Sweden are the reigning women’s champions and will hope the retain their title at home next year.

Qualifiers for the Women's World Floorball Championships have also been announced.

Toronto in Canada is set to host an American qualifier from January 29 to 30, before Valmiera in Latvia stages the one of three European qualifiers from February 2 to 6.

Liganano Sabbiodoro is scheduled to stage a second European qualifier on the same dates, with the third taking place in Slovakia from February 3 to 7.

The Asia Oceania qualifier is due to take place at Hachioji in Japan from June 29 to July 3.
