Formula E, the motorsport series that runs solely on electric, has launched a six-part esports racing competition with a prize pot of €100,000 (£90,000/$122,000).

Called Formula E Accelerate, it follows on from the Formula E Race at Home Challenge, hosted last year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Formula E Accelerate will feature a full 24-car virtual grid and run on the rFactor 2 gaming platform using circuits from the real-life Formula E season.

A qualifying session will run until Wednesday (January 13) on the virtual Tempelhof Airport circuit in Berlin, which will also act as the virtual season finale too.

Those with the three fastest times are guaranteed a spot in the Accelerate competition.

For participants who enter every one of the six rounds, with the finale worth double points, they are guaranteed a share of a minimum prize pool of €100,000.

"Formula E continues to create opportunities for fans and the next generation of racing drivers to get involved with the sport, and Formula E Accelerate will see a number of improvements that bring us closer to the real-life experience since our last event," said Mercedes Formula E driver and former Formula One driver, Stoffel Vandoorne, who won the Race at Home Challenge.

"Having won the Formula E Race At Home Challenge, I learnt how competitive and demanding it is to race at such a high standard on a regular basis.

"This time there will be an extra challenge, having to contend with the introduction of energy management and Attack Mode - something even I haven't tried yet - so it will be interesting to see how drivers manage."

The first round of the series is set to take place on January 28, with the Grand Final scheduled for March 25.

Some of the other circuits set to be raced include Hong Kong Harbourfront and the Red Hook City in New York City.
