World Sailing has confirmed it will bid to get Para sailing restored to the Paralympic Games programme at Los Angeles 2028 after missing out on Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) decided not to include sailing at the 2024 Paralympics in the French capital, prompting the sport's governing body to review its strategy.

Among the changes planned by the governing body are that the Para World Sailing Championship will take place alongside the combined Sailing World Championship, a proposal first announced at their 2018 annual conference.

The 2022 World Championships in The Hague in the Netherlands will include all Para sailing classes.

World Sailing also promised to streamline the competition schedule between major events as well as clearer categorisation for disabilities and give Para sailors the opportunity to compete alongside able-bodied athletes in the Hempel World Cup Series in an Open competition event.

World Sailing said it would target increased representation of its Para discipline at regional Games and competitions to strengthen its bid to regain its Paralympic place.

"Following the disappointing decision by the IPC not to include sailing at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, World Sailing has reviewed its strategy for Para sailing, so it can continue to grow, promote and develop the sport worldwide," World Sailing said in a statement.

"Part of this strategy also includes submitting a successful bid for inclusion in the 2028 Paralympic Games.

"World Sailing will continue to support and invest in the Para sailing development programme as well as the inclusion of Para sailors and coaches in the well-established Emerging Nations support programme.

"One key area of focus is working to increase inclusion of Para sailing in regional Games and competitions – pinnacle events for the emerging and developing member nations.

"World Sailing is engaging with the organisers of regional Para Games to seek opportunities for sailing to be part of the programme of these important multi-sport events to showcase the sport."

World Sailing claim the number of nations with Para sailors in competition has grown by 30 per cent in the last five years.
