India booked their place in the semi-finals of the International Cricket Counci Men's Cricket World Cup with a nervy 28-run victory over Bangladesh at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Rohit Sharma hit his fourth century of the tournament and KL Rahul scored 77 as the two openers put on 180 for the first wicket.

But India failed to capitalise on the explosive start as they finished their innings on 314-9.

Their total was just about enough, however, as Bangladesh were eliminated from the tournament after being bowled out for 286.

Hardik Pandya led the way for India with the ball, taking 3-60, as Bangladesh fell short of their target of 315 for victory, despite a late charge from the middle order.

Shakib Al Hasan was again the star for Bangladesh but his 66 was in vain as he struggled for support from his team-mates.

Victory for India, who were beaten by England on their last outing, guarantees their place in the semi-finals with a game to spare.

The result sent Bangladesh, who harboured slim hopes of qualifying for the last four, crashing out,

India looked on course for a huge total as Sharma and Rahul despatched the Bangladesh attack to all sides of the ground in a blistering opening to the innings.

Virat Kohil's team were unable to build on the platform set by the opening batsmen after Sharma was dismissed for 104 as they lost a cluster of wickets.

They were still able to record a score of 300-plus thanks to Rahul and a handy 48 from Rishabh Pant.

Bangladesh stuttered early on before Shakib steadied the ship at number three.

His departure for 66 seemingly ended any chance of Bangladesh recording a stunning upset but a middle-order rally when they were 179-6 gave them a glimmer of hope.

India were always favourites to clinch victory, however, and the slim hopes of a Bangladesh win were ended by Jaspit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, despite an entertaining unbeaten 51 from Mohammad Saifuddin.

Tomorrow England are due to meet New Zealand at the Riverside Ground at Chester-le-Street with both sides chasing a place in the semi-final.
