Luca Waldschmidt and Nadiem Amiri scored late goals as holders Germany beat Romania 4-2 to secure their place in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final, where they will face Spain.

Waldschmidt had earlier equalised from the spot with Romania having replied to Amiri's opener with a George Pușcaș double, including a 26th-minute penalty, at Renato Dall'Ara in Bologna.

Germany took the lead after 21 minutes through Hoffenheim midfielder Amiri, who broke forward and struck low past goalkeeper Andrei Radu.

Romania hit back five minutes later, though, with Pușcaș beating Alexander Nubel from the spot after Timo Baumgartl had fouled Ianis Hagi.

Pușcaș scored his second just before halftime, directing home a header from Andrei Ivan's cross from the left.

Germany restored parity six minutes after the restart when Waldschmidt squeezed a penalty past Radu after Hagi was penalised for pulling Mahmoud Dahoud's shirt.

Waldschmidt then put Germany ahead with a low free-kick in the 90th minute before Amiri added a fourth in stoppage time.

Four-times winners Spain reached the final, which is due to take place in Udine on Sunday (June 30), after recovering to defeat France 4-1 at Stadio Città del Tricolore in Reggio Emilia.

Forward Jean-Philippe Mateta gave France the lead with a 16th-minute penalty after Junior Firpo brought down Jeff Reine-Adelaide in the box, but Marc Roca brought Spain level just before the half hour mark, smashing into the net from close range following a corner.

Spain were awarded a spot-kick of their own in first-half stoppage time and Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up to convert.

They then extended their advantage soon after the restart, Dani Olmo finishing off a sharp counter-attack.

And the win was sealed in the 67th minute when substitute Borja Mayoral fired home Spain's fourth.

The final will be a repeat of the 2017 edition, when Germany overcame Spain 1-0.

That was the second of two triumphs for Germany at the biennial event, having also won the 2009 edition.

Spain's four successes came in 1986, 1998, 2011 and 2013.
