Nearly 24,000 students in the Lausanne region have taken a maths test using the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games as a main theme.
Every year in May, students in the 92 schools within the canton of Vaud – where Lausanne is located – take their cantonal reference tests (ECR) and the opportunity has been taken to combine them with raising awareness for the event that will take place from January 9 to 22 next year.
"This is the first time the theme has been common to such a large group of ECRs," explained Philippe Linder, head of the Student Assessment Unit at the Vaud Department of Education.
It is estimated that 70 per cent of schools in the region of Vaud, representing more than 130,000 students, are involved in the organisation of Lausanne 2020.
The interactions range from school discussions and plays around Olympic values to the development of symbolic elements of the Games such as the mascot, the official song or the look of the Games.
Games organisers plan to set up similar projects within Vaud schools in the coming months.
The Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games will involve 1,880 athletes aged from 15 to 18 years old from more than 80 countries.
The competitions will take place in the cantons of Vaud, Valais, Grisons and neighbouring France.
