A delegation from the city is attending this year’s edition with the aim of learning from Russian organisers about event delivery.

The delegation is being led by James McKenna, who also serves at the President and chief executive of the regional office of sustainable tourism in Lake Placid.

He expressed his hope the Winter Universiade in 2023 will help to develop their international brand.

"We see this FISU [International University Sports Federation] event as a springboard," McKenna said.

"Hosting this event is helping us improve our sports facilities that will benefit the local community, both by increasing recreational opportunities and by making these facilities more attractive to tourists 12 months a year.

"These Games can really help us extend our international sport brand."

Lake Placid are hopeful the Universiade will enable them to remain an important area, which will help attract college graduate sport fans.

Organisers claim they are working with various university sport governing bodies to help ensure the best North American athletes are competing in four years' time.

It comes with the American collegiate system, featuring key Championships, often seen to carry greater focus and importance.

National Championships, for instance, has led to no American Alpine skiers featuring here at Krasnoyarsk 2019.

Organisers hope to address this issue in time for Lake Placid 2023 to ensure a strong home delegation at the Universiade.

Experts in security, transportation and information technology have been present in the Lake Placid delegation.

Officials are also examining Krasnoyarsk’s ceremonies and culture, marketing, event management and legal efforts to boost their planning.

A further delegation from Lake Placid 2023 is expected to attend Lucerne 2021 to enhance their preparations further.

They will receive the FISU flag from Lucerne at the end of the next edition of the Universiade.

"We want to maintain the region's reputation as a leader in sports events," said Betsy Little, New York state senator.

"Lake Placid has a wonderful legacy of successfully hosting international multi-sport events and we see this legacy being extended by hosting another Winter Universiade."

The New York Village is twice a host of the Winter Olympics, staging the Games in 1932 and 1980.

New York is poised to host the Universiade for the third time.

The state also held the summer version of the event in Buffalo in 1993 and the winter edition in Lake Placid in 1972.

Lake Placid has been a consistent host of World Cup and World Championship competitions for several winter sports.

It is due to host the 2021 International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Championships
