Michal Krcmar led a clean sweep for the host nation in the men’s sprint at the International Biathlon Union Summer World Championships in the Czech Republic.

Krcmar shot cleanly and won in 24min 14.2sec, while team-mate Ondřej Moravec also shot clean on his way to silver, finishing just three seconds behind in Nové Město na Moravě.

Tomas Krupcik took bronze despite one penalty, 20.3 seconds back.

Paulina Fialkova of Slovakia claimed her first individual title at these Championships by taking the women’s sprint with a single penalty in 21:50.9.

Silver went to Monika Hojnisz of Poland with two penalties, 7.2 seconds behind.

Galina Vishnevskaya of Kazakhstan became one of only three athletes to shoot clean and finished with the bronze medal, 23.2 seconds back.

Fourth place went to the local favourite Veronika Vitkova, 30 seconds behind with a single penalty.

Jakub Stvrtecky of Czech Republic had earlier won the junior men’s sprint in his home stadium, adding to junior mixed relay gold he had won a day earlier as he finished in 25:56.4.

Silver went to Russia’s Viacheslav Maleev with two penalties, seven seconds back, while Stvrtecky's team-mate from the previous day, Vitezslav Hornig, took the last podium spot.

Kamila Zuk of Poland, who had played a huge part in securing silver behind the hosts in the previous day’s junior mixed relay, claimed the junior women’s sprint title with two penalties in 22:42.9sec.

Silver medal behind the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympian went to Marketa Davidova of Czech Republic with three penalties, 41.1 seconds back, while Russia’s Valeriia Vasnetcova matched last year's bronze medal.

Davidova, who had won silver with the Czech team in the senior mixed relay the day before, started with one penalty in prone, but was fast enough to leave the stadium in first position.

Zuk, with a later start number and one mistake, was four seconds behind the Czech biathlete.

However, the standing shooting changed the leader, as the Pole went for just one penalty loop, while her rival had two misses.

The result was the same as at the 2018 IBU Youth/Junior World Championships, when Davidova also finished behind Zuk.

The event is due to continue tomorrow.
