Heaven Garcia battled through her preliminary round bout at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s and Men’s Youth World Championships in Budapest.

The American fighter was touted as one of the boxers to watch at the Championships having already earned junior and youth titles in her career.

She was tested by Turkey’s Hatice Akbas in the women’s flyweight division today at the Duma Arena in Hungary’s capital city.

Garcia would ultimately edge a tightly fought contest, which saw all five judges score the contest 29-28.

Three of the judges scored the bout in the American’s favour, which saw her book a place in the next round.

Kazakhstan’s Zhansaya Abdraimova, who beat Garcia at the Youth Women’s World Championships in Guwahati last year, looked in ominous form in her first bout.

She clinched a unanimous victory against Germany’s Cathy Satorius.

England’s Caroline Dubois was another of the pre-Championship favourites to progress today, as she advanced in the women’s 60kg lightweight division.

Dubois was a unanimous winner against Australia’s Emma Lawson in her fight.

The two-time EUBC European women’s junior champion and this year’s European Youth Championships gold medallist appears set for a deep run in the competition.
