Ireland's Michaela Walsh reached the semi-final stage at the European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) Women's European Championships at the Asics Arena in Bulgarian capital Sofia today as she earned a 3-2 verdict in her 57 kilograms featherweight bout against Helina Bruyevich of Belarus.

Walsh, who beat Italy's world champion Alessia Mesiano in the previous rounds, will be joined in tomorrow's final four by two gold medallists from 2016.

Russia’s Daria Abramova has moved down from lightweight, where she won two years ago, and beat Lacramioara Perijoc of Romania, while Stanimira Petrova of Belarus, who took gold in the bantamweight class in 2016, has stepped up, and defeated Tamara Radunovic of Montenegro.

France’s Mona Mestiaen completes the quartet having beaten Jelena Zekic of Serbia.

The evening’s action concluded with the 64kg light welterweight quarter-finals bouts in which Turkey’s Sema Caliskan beat Antanina Aksenava of Belarus, Russia’s Ekaterina Dynnik beat Dana Borzei of Romania, Bulgaria’s Melis Yonuzova defeated Yvonne Rasmussen of Denmark and Ukraine’s Maria Bova Badulina beat Italy’s Valentina Alberti.

The evening session had got underway with the 48kg light fly quarter-finals – Bulgaria’s Sevda Asenova beat Laura Fuertes Fernandez of Spain, Romania’s Steluta Duta beat Ayse Cagirir of Turkey, Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota earned a 3-2 verdict over England’s Demie-Jade Resztan and Russia’s Ekaterina Paltceva beat Stephanie Silva of Italy.

The day’s action concluded with the 64kg light welterweight quarter-finals, in which Turkey’s Sema Caliskan beat Antanina Aksenava of Belarus, Russia’s Ekaterina Dynnik beat Dana Borzei of Romania, Bulgaria’s Melis Yonuzova defeated Yvonne Rasmussen of Denmark and Ukraine’s Maria Bova Badulina beat Italy’s Valentina Alberti.

Earlier in the day Ukraine’s 2016 51kg flyweight silver medallist Tetyana Kob was beaten by Russia’s Svetlana Soluianova by a 5-0 judging verdict.

In other bouts at that weight, Hungary’s Krisztina Beri lost to Norway’s Veronica Losvik, Bulgaria’s Gabriela Dimitrova beat Nela Frejherova of the Czech Republic, and Greece’s Aikaterini Koutsogeorgopoulou beat France’s Wassila Lhkadiri.

Sweden’s Lise Sandebjer beat Ursula Gottlob of Germany, Yana Burym of Belarus defeated Spain’s Andrea Lasheras Llanos, Claudia Nechita of Romania beat Italy’s Roberta Mostarda and Turkey’s Buse Cakiroglu beat Sandra Drabik of Poland. 

All were by unanimous 5-0 decision from the judges.

In two 75kg middleweight bouts, Russia’s Darima Sandakova beat Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey and Romania’s Ionela Nane stopped Patricia Marthn Cabrera in the first round.

The top ten ranked boxers in the 51kg, 57kg, 60kg, 69kg and 75kg categories will be given quota places for next year's European Games in Minsk.

Preliminary rounds will conclude tomorrow before the athletes are given a rest day on Sunday (June 10).

The semi-finals will then take place on Monday, June 11 with the final bouts on June 12.
