Ireland's Michaela Walsh stunned Italian world champion Alessia Mesiano today at the European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) Women's European Championships at the Asics Arena in Bulgarian capital Sofia.

Walsh, who celebrated her 25th birthday with an opening round win yesterday, boxed superbly off the back foot against her highly-fancied opponent at the Asics Arena.

Mesiano has won World and European Championship bronze medals in addition to her global crown in 2016, but was outclassed today.

Walsh will next face Belarus' Galina Bruyevich in the quarter-finals.

The winner of that contest is guaranteed a podium finish.

The top ten ranked boxers in the 51 kilograms, 57kg, 60kg, 69kg and 75kg categories will be given quota places for next year's European Games in Minsk.

Preliminary rounds will run until Saturday (June 9) before the athletes are given a rest day on June 10.

The semi-finals will then take place on June 11 with the final bouts taking place on June 12.
