Istanbul is set to stage the fifth event of the Karate 1-Premier League season with home hopes of success high.

Locals will expect success from Serap Ozcelik at the Asli Cakir Sports Hall, as she competes in the women's under-50 kilograms kumite event.

Ozcelik is the current grand winner in the discipline, which ensures she will begin as one of the favourites to top the podium.

She could face competition from Japan's Miho Miyahara and Ayaka Tadano, who lie behind her in the overall standings.

Eray Samdan has claimed two gold medals already this season and will eye further Turkish success in the men's under 60kg kumite event, while Burak Uygur will hope to lead the under-75kg standings.

Local contenders will have to contend with some of the sport's top names, with Spanish kata stars Sandra Sanchez and Damian Quintero among favourites in their events.

World champion Ryo Kiyuna of Japan is among the top contenders returning to the Karate 1-Premier League circuit having missed recent events.
