The World Para Dance Sport season is due to begin tomorrow with the first competition of the year taking place in Cuijk.

The competition in The Netherlands is expected to feature 63 athletes from 13 countries and will be the first time that the dancers have taken to the floor since the World Championships in Malle in Belgium last October.

Ukraine are looking like the team to keep an eye on with their squad containing world champions Olena Chynka, Ivan Sivak and Illona Slugovyna.

Sivak was forced to switch from duo to singles competitions in tragic circumstances following the death of his wife and dance partner Nadiia before the 2016 European Championships.

At the 2017 World Championships, Sivak performed excellently, collecting one gold and one bronze medal thanks to excellent performances in the men's single two and freestyle.

His compatriot Chynka impressed in all four of her events in Malle and she will be looking to show why she is the world champion in both the women's single and freestyle two compettiions.

She is also due to compete in the duo standard and Latin events with partner Oleksandr Onishchenko.

Slugovyna returns to the floor as reigning world champion in the women’s single one, while she also won the title in the duo standard one with partner Valeriy Bevzyuk.

Belarus and The Philippines are looking like Ukraine’s closest challengers in Cuijk, in an event due to finish on Sunday (April 1), with Hanna Harchakova and Roman Usmanov of the former expected to perform well in the combi standard two.

Filipino dancers Rhea Marquez and Julius Obero are the favourites for the combi standard and freestyle two events.

It was recently announced that dance sport is being considered as a demonstration sport for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
