Defending champions Australia were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by hosts India on the opening day of the Men's Hockey World League Final in Bhubaneswar.

All the action came in two second half minutes as Hardeep Singh opened the scoring for India before Jeremy Hayward levelled for Australia at the Kalinga Stadium.

Germany had earlier won the first match of the tournament as they beat England 2-0 in Pool B.

It leaves Germany at the top of the group following the opening round of games.

India broke the deadlock after 20 minutes thanks to a superb finish from Singh.

Their advantage did not last long, however, as Hayward replied barely 60 seconds later with a converted penalty corner.

Neither side were available to find a winner as the contest petered out into a draw, which will please the host nation more than Australia, who are among the pre-tournament favourites.

Olympic bronze medallists Germany got their campaign off to the perfect start as they overcame England.

Mats Grambusch put the German side in front after 19 minutes before they doubled their lead six minutes later through Christopher Rühr.

The result put Germany in the driving seat in the group, where all four teams are guaranteed to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Four matches are scheduled to take place on the second day of the event.

Olympic champions Argentina open their Pool A campaign against Belgium in a rematch of the final at last year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Spain are scheduled to take on The Netherlands in the other game in the group.

In Pool B, meanwhile, India are set to play England and Germany face Australia.
