Great Britain claimed two of the three gold medals available as the World Taekwondo (WT) Grand Prix made its African debut in Morocco's capital Rabat.

Double world champion Bianca Walkden won the women's over-67 kilograms class with Mahama Cho triumphing in the men's over-80kg division.

Turkey also topped the podium at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah with Nur Tatar clinching women's under-67kg honours.

Walkden, who retained her 2015 title in Muju in South Korea this year, beat Serbia's London 2012 Olympic champion Milica Mandic in her final to clinch gold.

Mandic also won gold in Muju at middleweight level but could not seal glory today when moving back up to the heaviest class.

The win for Walkden made it two wins out of two for the Briton on the Grand Prix circuit this year, after her triumph at the opening leg of the season in Russian capital Moscow.

Bronzes were shared by China's Shuyin Zheng and South Korea's Saebom An.

Cho, the world silver medallist, defeated Russia's Moscow champion and world bronze medallist Roman Kuznetsov in his final.

South Korean Kyo-Don In and Slovenia's Ivan Trajkovic collected the bronze medals.

Tatar, a double Olympic medallist and the Muju world champion, defeated Rio 2016 champion Oh Hye-ri of South Korea to seal gold.

Ruth Gbagbi of the Ivory Coast, the Moscow winner and the world champion at under-62kg, won bronze alongside another Turkish competitor in Irem Yaman.

The rise of African taekwondo has been widely discussed around the inaugural Grand Prix on the continent.

Africans won five medals in all at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

"This Grand Prix is the first Grand Prix on the African continent," said WT President Chungwon Choue.

"The 2012 London Olympic Games were more favorable to European countries, but the 2016 Rio Olympics were for the African continent."

Gen. Ahmed Fouly, the President of World Taekwondo Africa, added: "Africa is the top priority for Mr. President [Choue].

"We have lots of difficulties in Africa - transport, aviation, air fares - and the budgets of all counties are low; he knows this and appreciates this."

Competition continues tomorrow with the women's under-49kg, men's under-58kg and men's under-80kg events.
