A number of recently-crowned world champions and Olympic gold medallists are due to compete at the first World Taekwondo Grand Prix series event of the season, which begins in Moscow tomorrow.

World Taekwondo has confirmed a total of 212 athletes from 52 countries and a refugee team will participate at the USK CSKA Basketball Arena in the Russian capital, with the event due to run until Sunday (August 6).

This includes Ahmad Abughaush, who claimed Jordan's first Olympic medal when he won the men's 68 kilograms category at last year's Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Olympic bronze medallist Bianca Walkden, who topped the podium in the women's 73kg weight category at the World Championships in Muju in June, is also set to take part in Moscow.

Ivorian Cheick Sallah Cissé, gold medallist in the 80kg competition at Rio 2016, is among the entrants, along with Lee Ah-Reum, who delighted the South Korean crowd in Muju by winning the women's 57kg category.

Lee was also named the most valuable player at the event on home soil.

A total of 14 gold medalists from the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2017 World Championships will compete in Moscow.

Olympic ranking points and prize money will be up for grabs in the Russian city.

Grand Prix gold medallists pocket $5,000 (£3,800/€4,200), while silver medallists earn $3,000 (£2,300/€2,500) and athletes who claim bronze will take home $1,000 (£760/€841).

The second Grand Prix event of the season will be held in Moroccan capital Rabat from September 22 to 24, before the series moves to London for the third competition from October 20 to 22.

Abidjan in the Ivory Coast is scheduled to host the Grand Prix Final from December 2 to 3.

It precedes the World Team Championships, which are due to take place in the Ivorian capital on December 5 and 6.
