South Korea concluded the opening World Taekwondo Grand Prix event of the season in style as they claimed both gold medals on offer on the final day of competition in Moscow.

World champions Lee Ah-Reum and Lee Dae-hoon topped the podium in the women's under 57 kilograms and men's under 68kg events respectively at the USK CSKA Basketball Arena.

South Korea were guaranteed the women's title as Lee Ah-Reum went up against compatriot Kim So-hee.

Kim had started the better of the two players before Lee found her form and stormed into a 6-1 lead.

Kim managed to claw her her way back into the match and trailed 8-4 going into the final period but her team-mate regained her intensity and closed out a convincing 16-9 win.

Carolena Carstens of Panama and Belgium's Raheleh Asemani won the two bronze medals.

Lee Dae-hoon silenced the home crowd in the Russian capital as he beat Alexey Denisenko in the final.

The South Korean surged in front early on, taking a 14-1 lead, before the Russian gradually began to reduce the deficit.

Denisenko had given himself too much to do, however, and fell to an 18-11 defeat.

Olympic gold medalist Ahmad Abughaush of Jordan and Britain's Christian McNeish each took home a bronze medal.

The event was described as a huge success by World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue following the conclusion of the first Grand Prix tournament of the campaign.

"The Moscow 2017 World Taekwondo Grand Prix has been a fantastic competition and I would like to thank our hosts for staging such an excellent event," he said.

"Over the last three days we have enjoyed some exhilarating taekwondo by some of the world’s very best athletes.

"We have been glad to see that the rule changes we brought in at the start of this year have continued to encourage athletes to try more dynamic and spectacular techniques.

"This has led to some very exciting matches with last second twists and turns that makes our sport so enjoyable to watch."

The second Grand Prix event of the season is due to be held in Moroccan capital Rabat from September 22 to 24.
