The Virgin Islands claimed a shock win over Brazil on the fourth day of competition at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women's AmeriCup in Buenos Aires.

The Group A match went to overtime with the teams tied at 58-58 after the regulation four quarters and it was there that the Virgin Islands sealed victory with a 9-2 scoreline in their favour.

Natalie Day and Imani Tate combined for 38 of their team’s points as they inflicted a first defeat of the event on Brazil at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias.

Today’s other match in Group A saw hosts Argentina beat Colombia 70-47 to maintain their unbeaten record and secure qualification for the semi-finals.

The Argentinians captured a narrow lead early on and never relinquished the advantage.

Melisa Gretter was their stand-out performer with 16 points and six re-bounds.  

In Group B, Puerto Rico moved one step closer to reaching the penultimate round after claiming their first-ever win over Cuba, 70-67

Both teams had a slow start, but that all changed in the second quarter when Puerto Rico took control with a 26-12 quarter.

The second half saw Cuba start to chip away at the deficit with Anisleidy Galindo, a scorer of 20 points overall, leading the way.

The difference was down to three points with less than a minute to go, but Puerto Rico held on for the win.

Pamela Rosado produced 17 points for the victors. 

The earlier game in Group B pitted Paraguay against Mexico with the former triumphing 73-67 for their second win of the competition.

Paraguay won 10-4 in overtime following a 63-63 draw after 40 minutes.  

The top two teams from both groups will progress to the semi-finals.

Three spots are on offer for next year's FIBA Women's World Cup in Spain.

Action is due to continue until August 13 when the final will be played.
