Reigning champions Canada made an emphatic start to their title defence on the opening day of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women's AmeriCup in Argentina.

They claimed an 81-35 win over Cuba in Group B at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, in a repeat of the 2015 final.

The Canadians quickly established a firm lead, leading 28-8 after the first quarter and never looked back as they recorded a stunning opening victory.

Nirra Fields led the scoring for Canada with 18 points and five rebounds, while Ruth Hamblin added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Jamie Scott also posted 12 points and two rebounds.

Canada has now defeated Cuba six times in the past seven meetings at the tournament.

Elsewhere in Group B, Puerto Rico defeated Mexico 69-49.

In Group A, hosts Argentina began their campaign with an 80-48 victory over the Virgin Islands with Andrea Boquete scoring 17 points in front of a raucous crowd.

Brazil, meanwhile, opened their tournament with a 71-63 win over Venezuela.

The Brazilians established an early lead but their opponents fought back into the game and remained within touching distance following an impressive performance from Daniela Wallen, who ended with 20 points.

Brazil extended their lead in the third quarter, but the Venezuelans came charging back and levelled the match at 56-56.

However, 10 unanswered points in a row for Brazil gave them an unassailable lead as they emerged victorious.

The top two teams from both groups will progress to the semi-finals, while three spots are on offer for next year's FIBA Women's World Cup in Spain.

Action is due to continue until August 13 when the final will be played.
