The Virgin Islands have claimed their first International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women's AmeriCup victory after defeating Venezuela in Argentina today.

They secured their place at this tournament by winning the Centrobasket Championship on home soil last month and immediately made their presence felt at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires.

The teams finished the first quarter tied at 10 points each, but the Caribbean team built an eight-point lead at the end of the first half.

Nothing changed in the second as the Venezuelans began to fade with the Virgin Islands extending their dominance to claim a 79-53 win.

Reigning champions Canada continued their strong start with a 75-59 win over Puerto Rico.

Kia Nurse, named as the 2015 tournament’s most valuable player, was Canada’s main offensive weapon as she scored 17 points.

Brazil are also undefeated after claiming a 68-47 win over Colombia.

After a slow start, the Brazilians established a 13 point lead at half time and went on to extend their advantage further.

A sublime 27-point performance from Paola Ferrari catapulted Paraguay to only their second win in the history of the continental competition.

They overcame Cuba 69-66 in a game that was close throughout.

Cuba had a seven point lead at the end of the first half but the Paraguayans produced a 22-10 third quarter to move in front on the scoreboard.

The Cubans once again squeezed in front during the fourth quarter, but Ferrari finished the game with six straight points to seal the win for the Paraguayans.

The top two teams from both groups will progress to the semi-finals, while three spots are on offer for next year's FIBA Women's World Cup in Spain.

Action is due to continue until August 13 when the final will be played.
