Bob Price, the former President of the International Federation for Intellectual Disability Sport (Inas), has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Leeds Beckett University.

Price graduated from the Carnegie School of Sport in 1970 with a physical education degree.

He went on to become chairman of the British Paralympic Association and served as President of the European Paralympic Committee.

He also acted as Chef De Mission for Great Britain's team to five Paralympic Games.

Price stepped down as Inas President in 2013 after completing the maximum two three-year terms in office.

During his tenure, Price oversaw the successful re-inclusion of athletes with an intellectual disability into the Paralympic Games after they were excluded from competition in 2000 following a scandal involving Spain's basketball team.

It was discovered that none of Spain's gold medal winning squad had an intellectual disability.

Price was first elected as President of Inas in 2007 and immediately set about the task of building a collaboration between his organisation and the International Paralympic Committee.

A joint working group was soon established which, supported by a team of researchers from universities in Europe and North America, developed a system of classification which brought about a decision in 2009 to re-instate competition for athletes with an intellectual disability in time for London 2012.

A total of 120 athletes went on to compete at London in athletics, swimming and table tennis.

“Receiving an honorary degree from any institution is a cause for gratitude and receiving one from Leeds Beckett University has a special and added significance because it was on this campus that I first began as an undergraduate more than 50 years ago," Price said.

"There is a real sense of circularity associated with the fact that 50-odd years later the same institution has asked me back to a graduation ceremony.”

In 1993, Price was awarded an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to sport and the disabled.

He also gained membership of the Paralympic Order in 2006.
