International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has praised the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee's (FASANOC) Olympic Day run, which marked the country's National Sports Day.

The event saw more than 200 runners take to the streets of Lautoka.

Rajeshwar Prasad and national triathlon athlete Lavenia Dickinson were victorious in the men's and women's elite races respectively.

Prasad finished the six kilometres course in a time of 26min 25sec and Dickinson, 10th in the women's triathlon at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, clocked 31:30.

IOC President Bach claimed that the celebration was an opportunity for the wider community to join in sporting competition.

"It is a day for everyone girls, boys, men, women, young and old to come together and to show their love for sport," Bach said.

"Olympic Day run is much more than just having fun while playing sport or exercising.

"It is a day to celebrate the creation of the modern Olympic Movement and to share the Olympic values with everyone in the community."

As well as the fun run, participants were also able to try a host of other sports.

Soccer, rugby, basketball, baseball, chess, tennis, cricket and karate were all available.

"I was pleasantly surprised with the turnout," said FASANOC chief executive Lorraine Mar.

"I told the participants that they took part in a worldwide event that is celebrated by 206 other countries.

"The venue for next year's event is yet to be decided.

"What we would like is to grow the event.

"The challenge is to have the groups to organise the event in each centre.

"But hopefully we will partner again with the Government and hold it with the National Sports Day and Wellness Day and mobilise the civil servants in each centre to organise it."

McDonald’s signed a deal with FASANOC to sponsor the event.

The fast-food chain contributed FJD$6,000 (£2,000/$3,000/€2,500) to enable the organisation of the festivities.

McDonald's provided 500 tee-shirts and gave away meal vouchers as prizes for the day.

McDonald's and the IOC announced their worldwide multi-million dollar partnership agreement had come to an end last month.
