A newly refurbished 3,000-capacity stadium to host Gaelic football and hurling has opened in London.

McGovern Park in Ruislip in West London was closed in 2016 and new stand costing £4.17 million ($5.3 million/€4.7 million) has been constructed.

Around £930,000 ($1.18 million/€1 million) was raised by the London Gaelic Athletic Association, the occupants of the stadium.

The rest of the money came from a grant and a loan from the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA).

"It's not just a boost for London GAA, it's a boost for the GAA in Britain," Noel Dunning, chairman of the Ruislip development committee, said according to the BBC.

"Its the largest development undertaken by any GAA unit outside of Ireland.

"It's the same as any county ground at home, albeit on a smaller scale.

"It's a tremendous shot in the arm, it's something for younger players coming through the ranks in London to aspire to."

London plays matches within the Connacht Province and reached the Provincial Gaelic football final four years ago.

The GAA backed the project with John Horan set to become the President next year.

He was elected on the first-count during the organisation’s Annual Congress at Croke Park in Dublin in February.

Horan, a former Leinster Council chairman, polled 144 of the 278 votes cast and will serve as GAA President from 2018 to 2020.

Aogán Ó Fearghaíl is the current President.

The GAA is Ireland’s largest sporting organisation and claims to be celebrated as one of the great amateur sporting associations in the world.
