Kiribati National Olympic Committee (KNOC) have celebrated International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) by launching a digital campaign.

The KNOC opted to follow the lead of the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace, who produced a campaign titled #WePlayTogether.

It was aimed at encouraging organisations and individuals who support or carry out sport for development and activities promoting piece to participate in the commemoration of the IDSDP.

The campaign invited participants to share a picture on social media that represents for them the “power of sport to promote peace, unity and inclusion”.

The KNOC state they have worked with their National Sports Federations to showcase sports and sporting activities which took place in country as part of the day.

This included photos of competition or training activities on the day, with athletes displaying signs showing the hashtags #WePlayTogether, #IDSDP2017, #sport4betterworld.

They were also encouraged to include a theme which they consider to represent the “power of sport to promote, peace, unity and inclusion”.

National Federations sent their photos to the KNOC, who then uploaded them to their website and Facebook page to mark the day.

The campaign has been part of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres' call to make “2017 a year for peace”, with raising awareness of the need to reduce inequality and create sustainable cities and communities also seen as aims.

it is also hoped that the day promoted initiatives that include refugees and people with disabilities.
