Tatyana Kit of the Ukraine and Hungary's Zsanett Nemeth successfully defended their titles at the European Under-23 Wrestling Championships in Szombathely in Hungary today.

Kit retained her 58 kilograms crown with a hard-fought 9-4 victory over Sweden's Elin Johanna Nilsson in the final at the Arena Savaria.

The two bronze medals in the weight division were claimed by Azerbaijan's Alyona Kolesnik and Luisa Niemesch of Germany.

Nemeth came into the 75kg competition as the favourite to defend her gold medal and she did not disappoint in front of a partisan home crowd inside the venue.

The Hungarian wrestler overcame Belarusian competitor Natallia Lanko 7-4 to ensure she topped the podium for the second consecutive edition of the European Under-23 Wrestling Championships.

It proved to be a successful outing for previous champions as Liliya Horishina of the Ukraine, winner of the 53kg event in 2015, reclaimed the gold medal with an 11-8 fall victory against Leyla Gurbanova of Azerbaijan.

Iulia Leorda of Moldova was the recipient of the first bronze medal in the category, with the other going to Katsiaryna Pichkouskaya of Belarus.

Finland's Petra Olli, gold medallist in 2015, clinched the 63kg honours as she comprehensively beat Adela Hanzlickova of the Czech Republic, a three-time finalist at this level.

Olli made light work of what looked to be a tough challenge on paper as she cruised to the gold medal by virtue of a 10-3 scoreline.

Russia earned their only medal of the day thanks to Mariia Kuznetsova's bronze.

She was joined on the podium by Kriszta Incze of Romania, the other third-placed finisher in the division.

The competition in the Hungarian city is due to continue tomorrow.
