Over 50 Mayors from major cities across the world have today signed an agreement in support of Paris' bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Six Olympic host cities are among the 54 who have pledged their backing to Paris 2024 - Athens, Barcelona, Mexico City, Montreal, Munich and Sydney - while 35 capitals are represented.

In a joint statement, the Mayors claim Paris is a city which is "already committed to change" and has "the assets, the infrastructure and the ambition to bring a new spirit to the Games".

"These games would belong to everyone; they would be constructive and bring joy to all," the statement added.

"Like many who love Paris and sport, we support and wish the Paris 2024 bid every success."

Paris 2024 say the letter of support demonstrates "the strong alliance between Paris and the Olympic destinations that have the desire to see the Games return to the French capital for the first time in 100 years".

"I am honoured and delighted to see so many Mayors, from all over the world, support Paris in our bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games," Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a staunch supporter of the bid, said.

"It is a very strong sign of friendship, demonstrating that the bid of Paris 2024 is shared by many citizens, in all countries.

“By supporting us, these cities will also share with us their experience, their expertise and their help to plan a wonderful Games in Paris, that improve the lives of citizens through sport, innovation and sustainable living.”

The news comes after Paris 2024 unveiled their "Made for Sharing" slogan at an event held to coincide with the submission of their third candidature file to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

"This is an incredible and unique show of international support for Paris and our bid," Paris 2024 co-chairman Tony Estanguet said.

"At any Olympic and Paralympic Games it is an honour to host the world in your city, and this statement shows that the world does feel welcome in Paris.

“We are showing people from communities across the globe that the bid and Paris are ready to share our city with them and that Paris 2024 will be a spectacular celebration of sport and Olympism for the whole world."

Los Angeles and Budapest are also bidding for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, although the Hungarian capital decided to postpone the launch of their international promotion campaign amid growing calls for a referendum to be held on their candidacy.

The IOC will elect its chosen host city at the Session in Lima on September 13.
